5 Signs Your Brand Has a Performance Gap

We work with a lot of B2B businesses that come to us saying some version of the same thing: “We’re doing fine, but something’s not quite clicking.” Leads are okay. The website looks alright. The team is working hard. And yet growth feels harder than it should be.

That feeling usually has a name. We call it a performance gap, and it’s rarely one big thing going wrong. It’s usually a handful of small misalignments between what your brand says, how it looks, and what your buyers actually experience. None of them is dramatic on their own, but together, they add up to a lot of lost revenue.

Here are five of the most common signs we see when we run a Gap Analysis for a client, and what they tend to point to.

1. Your website traffic looks fine, but enquiries don't match it

This is the one that catches people out most often. Analytics show steady or growing traffic. Pages are getting visited. But the contact form, the callback request, the quote enquiry, none of them are moving in the same direction.

When we see this, it’s almost always a positioning or messaging issue rather than a traffic issue. People are arriving on the site, reading the homepage or a service page, and leaving without being convinced that this is the right business for their problem. The traffic is doing its job, but the brand isn’t.

2. Your sales team and your website tell slightly different stories

Ask your sales team how they describe what you do, in their own words, off the cuff. Then read your website’s homepage. If those two things don’t quite line up, you’ve got a positioning gap.

This happens gradually. The business evolves, new services get added, the sales conversation adapts to whatever’s working in the room, but the website and marketing materials don’t keep pace. Six months later, the website describes a slightly different business from the one your sales team is actually selling.

3. You win work on relationships, but lose it on first impressions

If most of your new business comes through referrals, existing relationships, or word of mouth, and you rarely win cold enquiries from people who found you online, that’s worth paying attention to.

It usually means the brand experience, the website, the way you present yourselves to someone who’s never heard of you before, isn’t doing enough heavy lifting. The people who already trust you will forgive a clunky website. The people who don’t know you yet won’t get past it.

4. Your brand looks "fine", but nobody can describe it in one sentence

We ask clients a simple question early on: if a stranger asked what makes you different from the three other companies they’re also talking to, what would you say? Often, the honest answer is “good service” or “we really care about our clients.”

The truth is, that’s not a differentiator. Every credible competitor says the same thing. If your team can’t articulate a clear point of difference quickly, your market definitely can’t either, and that gap shows up directly in how often you’re chosen over the alternatives.

5. Marketing activity is happening, but nothing's compounding

Lots of businesses are “doing marketing.” Social posts go out. The odd blog gets written. There might be some paid ads running. But a year later, things look much the same as they did before, just with more activity logged.

This is often a sign that the underlying brand foundations, positioning, messaging, and visual identity aren’t strong enough to make any single activity work harder over time. Without that foundation, marketing becomes a series of one-off pushes rather than something that builds.
